I'm so excited to share my THREE books with you...
I've written the book, Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal): Mind-Changing Theory and Strategies that Will Create Real Engagement because "engagement" is a term used so often in education but not one that often has a shared understanding between any two people. This book creates a common understanding.
My second book, The BIG Book of Engagement Strategies: A Continuation of the Book Engagement is Not a Unicorn (It's a Narwhal), has over 50 more strategies including ones from a dozen different educators to help educators find even more ways to help students engage in learning.
50 Ways to Engage Students with Google Apps co-written by Alice Keeler has over 50 strategies that integrate Google Apps (like Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.) to spark student engagement.
I came to education because I wanted to write but needed a back-up plan because I knew I couldn't become a well-paid, famous author overnight and I didn't want to live with my parents for the rest of my life. I was fortunate because my cooperating teacher was inspirational and I realized I loved teaching.
I became a certified Reading Specialist after completing my Master's degree in education at the University at Buffalo, and prior to that my Bachelor of Arts in English from Alfred University. Finally, I received my Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University at Buffalo.
In terms of my work history, I am an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology for a suburban school district in WNY. Prior to this, I was the Director of Elementary Education in a large suburban school district. Some additional highlights of my career include my work as an English Teacher, Staff Developer, Principal, Director of Instruction, and Superintendent. In each position, I was known for my leadership among students, faculty and staff, and my drive toward excellence for the entire school community.
I am also a very proud wife and mother who values the importance of work/life balance (which I'm still working on). My husband and I have three children, who make us smile and teach us the importance of patience and humor!
